SPECIAL OLYMPICS UNIFIED SPORTS® COMMUNITY PROGRAM
Special Olympics Unified Sports® combines individuals with intellectual disabilities (Special Olympics athletes) and individuals without intellectual disabilities (called partners) on sports teams for training and competition, and promotes social engagement and development.
All participants are recognized as equal contributors and, as such, develop a sense of belonging, learn to interact meaningfully with others, and forge lasting and mutually rewarding relationships beyond the playing field. Many parents/careers and siblings find that Unified Sports® offers a new way to spend time together and meet other families.
Using sports to help break down barriers that have historically kept people apart, Unified Sports® promotes meaningful inclusion and acceptance of people with intellectual disabilities in the community.
